PLANNING COMMISSION ROLE

It shall be the function and duty of the Planning Commission to make and adopt plans for the physical development of the Municipality including any areas outside the boundaries of the Municipality which, in the Commission’s judgment, bear relation to the planning of such Municipality.

The Planning Commission shall from time to time recommend to the appropriate public officials programs for public structures and improvements and for the financing thereof. It shall be part of its duties to consult and advise with public officials and agencies, public utility companies, civic, educational, professional and other organizations and with citizens with relation to the protection of carrying out of the plan.

WHO SERVES?

By city ordinance, the Cambridge Planning Commission comprises five members, appointed by the mayor. All members serve three-year terms without compensation and can hold no other municipal office. The Planning Commission elects a chairman from its members and creates and fills such other offices as it determines a need. The term of the chairman is one year, after which he remains eligible for re-election.

MEETINGS

The Planning Commission meets on the second Wednesday of each month, in the city building. A two-thirds vote of the members of the Planning Commission is required to pass a recommendation regarding planning and zoning topics and projects to the City Council for consideration. The Commission reviews and makes recommendation to the Council regarding all building-permit applications, building or remodeling projects, and all zoning rules and regulations.

FUNDING

Zoning Ordinance

The Cambridge Zoning Ordinance aims to promote the health, safety, morals and general welfare of the city, giving authority to the City of Cambridge to control planning and zoning within its corporate limits.

Developed in accordance with Chapter 19, Article 9 and Chapter 17, Article 10, of the Revised Statutes of the State of Nebraska and with the Comprehensive Development Plan of the City of Cambridge, the goals of this ordinance including avoiding congestion in streets; securing residents safety from fire, panic and other dangers; providing adequate light; preventing overcrowding  or overconcentration of the population; and facilitation adequate transportation, water, sewer, schools, parks and other public amenities.

Within this document, you will find zoning regulations that divide the city into districts to regulate and restrict things like the height, number of stories, size of buildings and other structures, percentage of lot that may be occupied, size of open spaces, density of population, location and use of buildings, courts and open spaces, and the construction, reconstruction, alteration, or repair of such buildings and structures.

Building Permit

Building permits are required prior to work on any project that involves erecting, constructing, enlarging, altering, moving, improving, removing, converting, or demolishing any building or structure on a platted lot or parcel.

All building permits are reviewed by the Cambridge Planning Commission, in an open meeting. Download and complete the forms below and submit them to the city office, which will review them for completeness and schedule them for review by the Planning Commission and, ultimately, the City Council, before work can begin. All permits must be in compliance with the Cambridge Zoning Ordinance.
